Photographed in Pilibhit, “Cloaked in Lilac” placed a tiger amid purple water hyacinths: beautiful at first glance, but also a record of an invasive plant affecting a protected wetland. The image became a Jury Selection in the Wildscape & Animals in Their Habitat category at the Nature inFocus Photography Awards 2022 and was subsequently published by outlets including The Times and The Better India. It was Safari Lab’s first photograph to travel widely—and it reflects how we approach Pilibhit today: with patience, local understanding and attention to the whole landscape, not just the tiger in the frame.

Where sal forest meets water.
Pilibhit belongs to the Himalayan Terai Arc: a long, narrow landscape of sal woodland, tall grass, swamps, rivers, canals and the Sharda Sagar reservoir edge near the India–Nepal border. Tigers move through a forest that also supports deer, wetland wildlife and rich birdlife. The contrast between dense green corridors and open water makes Pilibhit visually unlike Central India’s drier reserves—and rewards travellers who notice habitat as closely as animals.

Routes and ecotourism arrangements have changed in recent seasons. We confirm the responsible authority and active access instead of relying on old labels.
01Mahof, Mustafabad and current access
Mahof and Mustafabad are established names in Pilibhit tourism, but the usable route, reporting point and zone allocation must be checked for the travel date. We identify exactly where the safari begins and what the confirmed booking covers before choosing accommodation.
02The Barahi-side route
The Barahi-side tourism route is a newer addition to Pilibhit’s safari landscape. Its operating status, entry process and permit arrangements require current verification. We do not present it as interchangeable with Mahof or Mustafabad without checking the actual booking.
03Chuka and the Sharda Sagar edge
Chuka is closely associated with Pilibhit’s ecotourism identity, but accommodation, boating and other activities can be affected by administrative or regulatory decisions. We verify what is legally operating for your dates before including it in an itinerary or quote.
04A different kind of tiger landscape
Canals, tall grass and wetland edges influence both animal movement and visibility. Pilibhit rewards patient observation and guides who understand these linear routes. We never translate a past photographic encounter into a promise of a repeat sighting.
05Reaching Pilibhit
Bareilly is often the most practical air or rail gateway, while Lucknow and other rail connections may suit particular journeys. Road times depend on the accommodation and reporting point, so the transfer is planned after the safari base is understood.
06How we turn access into an itinerary
We start with your dates, travellers, field-time preference and comfort level. Then we verify current routes, permits, vehicle and guide arrangements, suitable stays and transfers. Yes. Tall grass, canals, wetlands and changing Terai light create distinctive photographic opportunities. Wildlife remains unpredictable, and no particular tiger or scene can be guaranteed.
Can you guarantee the Barahi male or another known tiger?
No. Individual tigers move naturally across the landscape. Historical sightings and photographs help tell Pilibhit’s story but are never used as a promise of a future encounter.
